Yes, I was a lawyer for a looong time. I started in private practice working for big law firms, then switched to public service, prosecuting murders, drug dealers, gang bangers, child sex-offenders, and all-around-bad dudes. One of my homicide defendants referred to me as The Devil in The Skirt, which I took as a compliment. It was da bomb for many, many years. And then it wasn’t. Burned out and bored, I craved something creative, something that would involve making others’ lives better, something that didn’t involve fighting it out in a courtroom.
And so Colleen Covell Design was born. I decided to go full-time with my passion for interiors, which I had been doing on the side for years. When I announced my plan to my attorney colleagues, one of them, a young, elitist woman said, “Seriously? Interior design? But you are so smart and such a good lawyer.” I won’t disclose my response. Well, maybe after a couple of glasses of wine.
But it highlighted for me a common fallacy about interior designers – that we are these flighty, shallow, (usually) women, who just want to spend exorbitant amounts of money. In my case, nothing could be farther from the truth. One of the benefits of a career spent in the law is that I am a supreme communicator, who is hyper-organized and focused, and an expert problem solver, all essential skills for a great designer. Having managed numerous renovations in my own homes, I uniquely understand your perspective as a client. I provide smart, functional and beautiful solutions to make your home a haven for you and your brood.
Who knows, you may end up calling me the Angel in the Skirt!
